Is becoming a film director hard?

Yes it is. I love my job and I love doing what I do, but it’s a tough industry, and a job really is a passion. Sometimes you have to be a bit of a workaholic to be able to sustain it long enough to do what you love.

What should people watch first about your work?

First of all, watch anything by Wes Anderson. Or, I mean – you like Wes Anderson? Check out “Moonrise Kingdom”. It’s amazing and I really like it. It’s a perfect film, and great to watch because it’s not about you. It’s not about the director at all. When you watch it you’re the one who’s watching it. It’s totally random and entirely on the set, but it’s just really enjoyable.

I also like “The Royal Tenenbaums”. I would suggest that for a lot of people. If you haven’t seen that then get your tickets for next weekend because it’s going to be a great film. It’s not the story of Michael Moore [one of the movie’s creators] it’s the story about ten people. It’s very fun. It also has some really funny stuff, and a lot of fun scenes where you see some really amazing action.

If you were to film this kind of film for the first time you’d be playing yourself?

Well, actually, I think I’ve played the parts of some of the characters a fair bit already. You know, there’s been a lot of talk about me being a very small character. I’m definitely the first character that you play who is a very ordinary guy and nobody would guess it. I wouldn’t want to be a character like that in a film. I just don’t want to be the same character every time you go to take a picture.

I actually played the part of someone who could be described as extremely good-looking, very good-spoken and very well-read [in “The Royal Tenenbaums”]

Have you considered directing your own films?

Yeah, I have. When I was younger, I was doing some kind of animation in Germany from the age of fifteen. I was very fortunate that I got some acting experience, but when I was in my teens I didn’t want to go out much. I didn’t want to do any kind of TV and movies and I was just doing my own stuff. In the 1980s I started doing animation and that’s when the idea
