A senior U.S. Navy officer who was involved in the investigation of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has died.
Rear Adm. Gregory H. Ross, 47, of Groton, Conn., died Friday after he suffered a medical episode Friday morning at a U.S. Naval Hospital. He was in stable condition.
Ross was in charge of the lead investigation into one of America’s most sensitive intelligence operations — the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He and his team spent several months examining thousands of documents, interviewing thousands of people, gathering hundreds of audio and video recordings and watching video and intelligence data.
Ross had been on the lead investigation before he transferred to other duties in late September. Shortly thereafter, he suffered medical issues, causing him to miss the beginning of the year-long investigation.
In a statement Monday, the Navy said that Ross’ death has been confirmed and that the investigation remained under way. The statement did not elaborate on his condition.
President Obama commended Ross’ work on the investigation, and also expressed his condolences to his family. In a statement issued Saturday, the White House said that President Obama met with the commander of the Joint Forces Command during Ross’ visit to Quantico to discuss “a number of key issues related to the military’s mission in the Middle East and worldwide counterterrorism operations.”
