The difference between editing and retouching is the level a model can expect from the application of retouching. There are several common categories of edits that may be made to models that are used by the software and by the photographer. For beginners this may mean adding shadow areas or highlights (also called highlight and shadow removal) or making contours of the model, changing the color of the background, or changing the size of the features. For more experienced photographers it would be more appropriate to create the model in a new pose and take some sort of photograph with the model to ensure the final look of the photograph is captured.

It’s important to understand that it’s not about the final look or style of your photographs but rather about capturing the essence of the model and giving it a sense of authenticity in the photo. It’s important to take the time to understand the style of photographs with your model from the point of view of a real photographer. For example, a stylist, for a fashion model, might create a photograph that has a more professional look, but it’s not necessarily the type of photo you would create for your own client. It’s not as important as simply capturing the essence of the model and then giving it what the photographer wants. One of the best ways to capture the essence of your model will be to have her pose in an environment that represents that unique style and that specific pose and style is often what you are going for.
