How do you define it? We’re going to put you in the head of a music producer, the one that made the records and the one that made the song. And, uh, we’re gonna make us believe it.”
“We’re gonna put you in the head of a music producer, the one that made the records and the one that made the song. And, uh, we’re gonna make us believe it.”
As much as you’d like to throw your weight behind that, what’s your view of “gangsta rap” itself? Are you a fan?
I think we’re more than a little bit of a fan of it. I do think it has a certain appeal with the younger generation of people, but I’m of the opinion that it actually has some flaws. Like, I don’t know if they’re necessarily hip-hop fans — the word “hip-hop” just sounds cool, really — but I do find that there are certain songs that have the elements of hip-hop and they seem really cool. And then there are more songs that seem like, “This was on a rap album, it was on a classic hip-hop album that you know and it had a hook and it had some raps.” I don’t really know what to call it. Maybe you can’t call it hip-hop because you don’t really feel like you’re listening to a hip-hop song or because it’s supposed to be rap. But I think it’s really fun, it really is. I mean, we have that song on the track list — we call this “The Fonz Titties.” And there was one track on a song called “Jungle.” And you had some great rap songs on that as well — “Gangsta Rap” and those songs were really cool. I’m proud that some of our songs are in the mix. I’m excited! I don’t really care about who’s saying that it’s not a genre. It’s not cool to criticize somebody — unless that critic has been saying for five years and hasn’t changed their mind!
For the longest time on this album, the lyrics have been about a lot of things. Was there one that was hardest to write, given all of that went into it?
Oh, yeah. There were some songs that really were challenging to write, especially on “Jungle.” So, “Gangsta Rap,” “Stomp on a Peach,” “Jungle,” so
