One of the earliest samples of a 4 bar sample is on Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” (2001) and it’s very similar to the Eminem classic “Lose Yourself In Space,” on which 4 bars is also sampled. The rapper who made this sample was actually going by the name of “The Bomb Squad” and produced and performed the song with producer RZA, though its origin can’t really be traced back to either of them.
The song was released at the end of 2001 – right after Eminem made his first appearance on “Sugar Ray.” At the time, “The Bomb Squad” was more known for its singles than it was for its albums, but it quickly caught on with hip-hop fans everywhere. It remained popular for some time, but things started to break down when “Sugar Ray” was pushed back to 2007. In this new era, Eminem’s “Lose Yourself in Space” was able to take the cake as it had the majority of the album’s tracks (which included “Shady” and “Chains,” and two of RZA’s own “4 Bars” samples) in place of the song.
If you ever heard “4 Bars” in an Eminem song without “Lose Yourself in Space” in the middle, you probably got bored – but that’s exactly what you should expect from Eminem and his songs.
