In general, no. Most videographers who work in the entertainment industry are not paid on an hourly basis. When most of us start our careers at the video companies that we work for, a basic salary can range anywhere from $4 hours per day, usually more. To be a true videographer, you have to spend at least six months on your contract, as a producer, camera operator, or editor. In other words, there’s usually an hourly rate or a part-time model rate, as long as someone is working full-time.
When you become a full-time videographer, they will expect you to work a minimum number of hours per week, typically more, and if you’re getting paid by the hour (i.e. $2 per hour), you will always be working 40 hours a week. So if your video is being broadcast for two hours, you’re paying $40 to be a full-time videographer. Depending on what type of work you do, the hourly rate will change, but generally not by much and the contract usually lasts about two years.
A full-time videographer will also be expected to work at least as many nights a week as the number of hours your contract says you need to work, but will likely also be expected to make extra money through tips and other commissions. In general, if you’re an employee, there is no minimum wage that video production companies can impose, as long as you are properly compensated for the time and money you put in.
As for how much video production workers should work, that can vary greatly depending on what role you do, how big a department is involved, or if you make any other independent contributions to your production crew. Most video production companies ask for about 50 employees; in some cases, they might want more – you may be on one of a production team which includes a director, editor, producer, executive, executive, cinematographer and a photographer.
