The first guitar that I ever owned was a Gibson LP-1250. Since then I’ve owned guitars from all brands including a Fender Stratocaster which I traded in for a Fender Mustang. I’ve played through many different guitars, guitars I like to call “fancy”. There is some great music to be had with almost any guitar, that is why I love the guitar as much as I do.
You are a professional guitarist with more than 40 years’ experience. What type of music is most difficult to play for you?
There is no doubt that the toughest type of music for me is one that is written by the solo artist. It’s the type of music that the guitar player must master on his/her own in order to make it interesting. Most of the top songs are written by solo artists so that means in general the guitar player’s work is the most difficult to do. I suppose if you play with great musicians then they help you a lot. But I am sure many professionals are hard at work on playing songs written by others. I do think sometimes the best music for me lies in solo work, but to be honest there isn’t anything easier than playing with a great guitar player.
What are five pieces of advice you can give to aspiring guitarists?
Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice. You get the point. When it comes to playing the guitar, practice is everything. I never get tired of playing. There is nothing to do to me but to make music. So you really don’t need to be special; you just need to study the music. When you study well all of the different styles of music will come easy to you.
The guitar is a tool you can use to create your own music. You can be the best person there is at making music, or you can be the worst. If you play really well and you have a strong ear and strong musical mind then you can be the best person there is at making music.
What advice would you give to a young guitar player starting out playing guitar?
When I started, I took the easiest way out and just started playing the chords. Now that I’ve been playing for so long I realize you have to study hard to get good! There are many great guitar players out there so you have to study hard and learn your style thoroughly.
