Some people with very little or no weight loss may not become overweight, but may become very overweight, and can even have some types of heart disease. This is called “obesity excess.” Obese patients are at higher risk of heart disease and strokes, and they also have a higher risk of death from any medical cause.
What causes obesity excess?
Some people are normal-weight, or lean, and others are obese. But all are at high risk for obesity or overweight.
Obesity excess occurs mostly in people with a normal body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight in relation to height, of at least 25. Normal-weight people and lean people, but not obese, tend to have high BMIs.
Most excess weight is also inherited. People who are overweight often have a genetic condition called MetS, in which their BMI is too high. Obesity-related MetS is almost always inherited.
When does excess weight become unhealthy?
Obesity is not a disease, but a condition, a disorder, or a condition with serious consequences. It’s more serious for people who already have a health condition, or who are at higher risk for one, such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
