The study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine examined the body size of 5,636 adult men who participated in the study.
The study looked at waist circumference and BMI, or body density, as measured by a tape measure. The tape measure was inserted in the abdomen. As participants walked in and out of the laboratory, their waist measurements were captured and compared with a weight-and-height database, which provided a relative estimate of height and weight.
Women, however, found that belly dancing was associated with larger, more-muscular waists than in women without belly dancing experience.
The correlation between belly dancing, BMI and waist circumference in the participants with different experience levels was significant for all three BMI, Waist circumference, and total waist circumference variables.
Belly dancing was associated with an increase in BMI, Waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio in women with the highest levels of belly dancing experience compared to their less-experienced counterparts.
According to the researchers, while some belly dancers might look like they are having fun, it makes them less active. Their waist circumference also increased, compared to their more active counterparts.
Belly dancing could not account for all of the effect in the study, but the researchers said that it could have a causal effect in terms of fat storage, especially if combined with exercise and weight loss. The BMI that a person’s belly dancing experience predicted for her waist circumference may have to do with the number of years of belly dancing she had.
As a result, the researchers suggest trying belly dancing for a little while to get into a rhythm before entering the gym.
