As you begin, you’ll need to be careful not to be too dependent on Adobe Photoshop or gimp. There is a huge difference between the two. What we need is an application that’s easy to use, fast, and can handle our needs.
In this post I’ve been going over how to use Gimp. It’s a free, open source graphics editor that is easy to learn and does what you need it to do – do what you need it to do. And it isn’t that expensive.
For our purposes, Gimp is perfect, but we’ll be putting the finishing touches on a more advanced application and will be using Krita on the Mac rather than just a plain text editor on Windows. In the end you’ll be able to get pretty far.
First up, let’s go over the basics
Go to http://gimp.org/download. This page lists a number of software packages, the most important being GIMP – the graphical frontend. If it’s GIMP you need, you’re pretty well set. Just download it, and use the installation wizard to get the latest version.
Next, we need to download the source code. From the Download page (the one you see with a green dot over it), click on the “Download” menu item. This downloads the source code into an zip file, so you can keep it safely. This is where it starts getting complicated.
For some reason, every time you do this, GIMP gives you a warning – click on it and choose “Notify me of updates”. What that means is that GIMP’s own updater checks every single folder in the download and then installs the latest necessary source code. If it finds a source code update (i.e. one that can fix a bug in gimp) in there, it will skip all that and only install it for you. I understand that this is convenient and would appreciate it. But this does mean it will take up space on your desktop on your hard drive.
For this tutorial, we’ll be downloading version 8.1.2, as most people aren’t using this anymore. We’ll download it using 7-Zip, but there are also options available to download it from the internet. I prefer 7-Zip as it lets you see what files the program is saving to your desktop,
