Some people say if you give an opening, they put it out there,” said O’Hara, who was born in Ireland and spent time in Jamaica before moving to Brazil as a youngster. “If they want you to throw balls and score goals you’ve got to play better with the ball. If you’re tired on the ball, he’d have a line of play for somebody and somebody else. He has a great sense of players that work together, that feel really, really comfortable. The thing I like about him is he has really good players who have great play; everybody knows where the man is and who he is.”
That familiarity with teammates is a hallmark of Guardiola. “I have so many friends and teammates who I look up to and want to be like,” Guardiola told The Wall Street Journal in 2014. “My brother and father, my teammates. In a sense, I don’t want to be like them.”
A longtime fan of the LA Galaxy—he grew up rooting for the team—O’Hara says he is always on Twitter to check on his old teammates. But he also admits that there are times when there is little time to follow the league’s latest trends. “It’s the way we grow as men,” said O’Hara, who says he has learned a lot from Guardiola over the years. “As professionals in sports you have to be really diligent about how to get better, but also in terms of life, I do care in terms of how I live and what I do with my time.”
When he’s not in the mood to follow the latest news, O’Hara is usually watching a good soccer ball game or eating at the finest restaurant in Manhattan. He spends several days a week working at The Post and the Daily News. (As he noted to The Daily Beast in one of his many Twitter conversations last week, “I am an old-school New Yorker.”)
O’Hara also shares his home in Santa Teresa with his fiancée, the actress Sarah Shahi, who plays the antagonist to his character in “Guardiola and Me.” O’Hara recently bought a house in Bel Air for $3.9 million, a two-flat he has owned for 16 years.
O’Hara’s former teammates, including the two most notable internationals in MLS history—Gonzalo Higuain and David Beckham—all attended UC Santa Cruz, where O’Hara became an avid follower of soccer.
