Vibrato is a vocal effect that is created by the vocal chords being stretched, or vibrated as a melody. Vocalists use vibrato to alter the intensity or duration of a vocal line or sound in order to create more or less volume in the overall performance. Vibrato has been a signature of traditional Western music since Bach, and has been used in both Western and traditional Indian music.
How to produce vibrato in your voice?
Vibrato is generally achieved by moving the lower vocal chords in combination with the lower or higher vocal chords in a rhythmic way through the voice at different pitch levels. The goal is to create more or less volume in the tone produced to suit the melody; however for the singer, that often requires different techniques.
In contrast to traditional methods of creating vibrato through musical techniques, vibrato as a means to control the breath of the singer may be achieved through vocal training, vocal theory or the development of a certain rhythm through the singer’s own vocal technique.
One of the most well-known vocalists in North America, singer Marianne Faithfull, gained global fame performing vibrato with the help of a vocal coach named Tim W. Sheppard. Marianne used to practice with Faithfull’s vocal coach Tim W. Sheppard but the singer recently asked him to stop coaching her as she no longer needs his help. Since then, Marianne has had a hard time finding a vocal coach of her own because they don’t teach vocal exercises in her voice. She does continue to sing with her coach and she even teaches an interactive piece as part of her ongoing online course called “Voice Workshop with Marianne Faithfull”.

What has been your most challenging exercise?
My favorite part of these exercises is that they’re all easy, but very challenging so I would say that it’s actually about maintaining focus during the entire exercise!
What are some of their strengths and weaknesses?
I think that the best thing about it is that it’s all really short and it doesn’t take a lot of time to do. Also, the vocal exercises themselves always bring back to my mind what I’ve been working on and what has helped me develop my voice so far in this course. That’s very nice because you can also see a new habit develop as you put these exercises into your routine and you can get a very good idea of how you can do it with more ease.
