What equipment do I need to shoot a music video?

Music videos are an art form that only a handful of people actually shoot, so the gear you need depends on your budget and the type of music videos you plan to make.

I’d recommend some solid camera equipment to go with your camera and a few lenses that will be ideal for specific music video scenes. A few good lenses will definitely speed up the editing process and help you get better shots.

I also recommend two different lenses if you plan on creating your music videos with different artists, in fact, I highly recommend using them on your images.

The lenses are:

A wide angle lens (30mm or longer) that provides you with a lot of depth

(30mm or longer) that provides you with a lot of depth A telephoto lens (50mm or longer) that allows you to have your subjects in the scene close. With the 50mm lens the subject is usually a lot closer than at 35mm and at 50mm it has more of the dynamic range of the 35mm focal length.

(50mm or longer) that allows you to have your subject in the scene close. With the 50mm lens the subject is usually a lot closer than at 35mm and at 50mm it has more of the dynamic range of the 35mm focal length. A short telephoto lens (25mm or less) with a long focal length, which allows you to get in the background and not have the subject in the foreground.

(25mm or less) with a long focal length, which allows you to get in the background and not have the subject in the foreground. A zoom lens (12X or longer) which will allow you to zoom in and out of the camera frame.

You’re ready to go!

With that being said, let’s get started! Make sure you have the following equipment at your disposal.

How to shoot a music video:

I found all the videos below to be great examples of the most important things to get right when shooting a music video. When you’re shooting music videos, you don’t want your photos to look like you just tried to do it the old fashioned way. You want your photos to look like movies where every single frame is a perfect shot:

If you want your music video images to be a perfect representation of the movie’s aesthetic then there’s no better way to achieve that than to shoot with high-resolution DSLRs. You should only ever ever shoot at this resolution
