With the exception of some very specific requirements, the following rules apply to everyone, regardless of what kind of game(s) they play in. The rules are written to help players understand how the cards interact with one another. As a general rule, play a game of Magic only if you are fully prepared to play against other people. We believe that the best Magic is played, not by the best players, but by the best players, and that is what we believe will happen in real life: you will lose to other people, but you will win with your deck.

You should play fair with other players. If you have someone who is cheating, you have already lost, even if you know that person was playing with something very close to the best deck. As a player, you should try to behave in a way that will help the game stay fair for everyone. This can involve a number of things, such as not throwing cards, or playing only cards which you have not seen.

2. Play the Game on the Format Your Friends Play.

Magic is a game of strategy, but it makes some special rules which are not commonly understood by the average player. When players play against each other, they want to be able to make informed decisions from the start, and then execute their strategies, and hopefully win. If you lose to someone who plays the wrong format, you will still lose. That is not the goal of the game–a strategy is there to make you win. Don’t play Magic to get ahead of others. You don’t want one player to be leading the format against the others, because if you are losing to that deck, you won’t be able to compete. Play the format with which you are most comfortable.
