The most difficult instrument in the world to learn for a first time is the violin, followed by the cello, then the piano at second violin.
The first year at an elite school in Switzerland should take about 4 years to learn, the shortest time needed. After that you should be able to play one or two pieces a day, with great ease.
The following year the performance of two cello concertos and about 10 or 20 pieces a day should be possible.
But don’t take my word for it! How long did it take me to master my first hand made violin, and what about the best teachers to me?
A lot of research was done on the subjects I mentioned above. Here are a few of them:
1. Study results from my teacher, who is about 100 years old.
I was told that my teacher, who studied to be a pilot with the German Airforce, could reach 300 performances a day of the violin by the time he was 70 years old.
However, I can’t recall any evidence for my teacher having reached 300 violin performances in the first 70 years of his life.
He was only able to play 4 or 5 pieces and I even think he had trouble with all of them.
2. How long did it take for my teacher to learn to string my violin, and how long was my string lesson for them?
They only trained me a few months, on the first day of high school. They did not train me extensively for a couple of months.
3. What is the best teacher in the world?
The best teacher in the world depends on the kind of teacher you have. The best teachers can teach your instrument in any setting. These best teachers usually have 20 years learning experience and are very professional.
In my case I had only one bad teacher, from the first to the last lesson. It is very difficult to learn to play the violin well with 1 bad teacher.
4. What was my teacher’s teaching style?
The teacher I had was not very professional. He only knew how to teach me the violin very well, but not much else. It was very challenging and difficult to learn to play something new.
5. What books did my teacher carry with him?
