Halo 5: Guardians has been the fastest-selling Xbox One game ever, but there’s one part of it that hasn’t done quite as well.
According to the top grossing games list at the E3 gaming conference (via @NerdSully) and the Top 200 games list shared by the official Halo Facebook page, players have purchased Halo: The Master Chief Collection at the peak of the holiday sales period – before the game’s launch.
However, there is a caveat. If an Xbox One user plays at least one Halo match each day in the first week (as is the case with the bulk of us who played in late August through September) during sales, they will receive a free code for Halo 5: Guardians. The code will work for the game’s first week of release, and will be usable on any Xbox One in the United States, regardless of whether or not it’s been pre-ordered.
On Monday there were two games in the top 100, both from Ubisoft and Call of Duty: Black Ops III, both of which weren’t pre-ordered. Halo 4 and the recent Call of Duty: Black Ops DLC expansion included as part of the package have sold out.
“You really need all your friends on your team,” says the company’s senior vice president of marketing, Phil Spencer. “You need to know that the game is out there, so you need to bring it along to a game night, even if you’ve already bought it. And I think the number one thing we want gamers to do is share all their achievements, and share your videos, and share your gameplay. We need an entire community of Halo fans to show and demonstrate that we have their back, and we have to support them.”
This week’s sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops III has seen the franchise move up two slots from the top spot, but the series hasn’t gone down at all since Halo 5 first launched in January 2014.
The rest of the top 200 includes Grand Theft Auto V, Halo 5, The Witcher and Assassin’s Creed Rogue, along with a few other stand-out games like Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Avengers Alliance and Titanfall 2.
Halo 5: Guardians launches on November 6 for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows 10 PC.
