If you want to get really good or just get to the next level, it depends on your skill level. However, you have several options.
There is an amazing course I went through on this topic at The Guitar Center, called Guitar 1-A-Day. It is 100% online and is incredibly challenging, but it is also 100% FREE and you do not take the course until you’re almost ready to teach yourself so that you will be at the level of a professional teacher.
The best way to learn guitar is to get playing and listen to some songs. If you have an instrument or are just starting, you should start with just a few songs. You should find some songs that you can play along with, that you get excited about doing, and get to the point that playing the songs in and of themselves, really gets it.
You have to be at the level in guitar that you can learn the songs, and play them. What we’ve seen with lots and lots of people is they just have to be able to pick songs and learn how to play them from a beginner’s point of view without being able to actually perform them very quickly. They have to be able to understand the melodies in one line and all the lyrics just without thinking about it.
That’s why you spend your whole life just playing with a metronome while you’re trying to find a song that’s not too hard. As you get better at doing that, you will become better and better at figuring out what the words are.
But if you’re just getting started when first learning guitar, there are a lot of songs out there that will make you jump out of your seat. But as you build up all those songs, you will be playing the notes of them as well as getting your hands on other songs with those notes, playing along with them. If you aren’t able to write your own melodies and lyrics, you may have to look for other people that have done it for you.
So you have to really learn to get your feet wet. Once you do this, you will be able to learn the whole song without looking elsewhere.
There is no one right answer and the best thing you can do is really just keep learning and learning new songs just to see what works best for you. You’ll be amazed at what you find in the end!
