Bubble Butt is a phrase sometimes used to describe a type of body art that involves the body with a bubble shape, usually to represent a sexual organ or even as a self-portrait with the bubble rising at a different angle.
Origin
The phrase “bubble butt” stems from an original character in the cartoon “Garden Party” of the 1990s. In the cartoon, which was made by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim show “Rick and Morty,” an imaginary bubble shape is featured with a tongue poking through it. The “bubble butt” character was often featured in fanart and comic strips, usually to portray a sexually aroused character or a sexual fantasy.
Spread
According to Buzzfeed, the phrase originated in 2006 during a thread on the /r/funny subreddit, which featured several different pictures of “Bubble Butt” body art. The image macro trended in 2007 and 2010, as well.
A Tumblr page titled “Bubble Butt” is created by user @Gardner__Stalker in 2011. It has received over 13,000 notes as of March 2010. The page contains numerous comics about the bubble butt. An image macro featuring the bubble butt is featured in multiple images on Tumblr, including one which features an exaggerated version of the Bubble Head character from “Garden Party,” and one of a bubble butt in a suit with a “sexy dog” head and “I Wanna Be A Real Dog” written in lipstick (shown below).
On Twitter, the phrase originated as a response to a picture of the bubble butt taken by a user, @Gardner__Stalker, on April 6th, 2011. On that day, Twitter user @Gardner__Stalker responded, “Can’t sleep, got a Bubble Butt?” on the hashtag “#boo [sic]” and uploaded a photo of himself posing in an elaborate bubble butt costume (shown below). Within two days, the tweet gained over 12,800 retweets, 16,400 likes and 4,500 retweets with the hashtag “#bubblebutt” being commonly used in reply to the photo (shown below).
