This is a question that comes up a lot for us. But let’s be honest, if we’re making 10 to 12 films, that’s not a lot of money in terms of income. We’re trying to make something that doesn’t suck – our videos will help our brands get exposure and our fans.
A lot of times these films are made by people that have seen the movies before, but people are more concerned about what the director’s style is than what the finished product looks like.
How much does a shoot cost? How long of a shoot do you need?
For a commercial, we will shoot at least a day and a half. The length of a shoot depends on the location, the size of the film and the budget. For short films we will shoot less and longer films, we will shoot somewhere between 4 and 6 days, we will shoot on location.
Are there any other costs?
We typically rent space and hire an assistant. The location rental fee ranges from $750 – $1200. The assistants are required to do their own shoot and can’t work for free when they are not working for the studio.
How many takes does it take to edit the footage? How many hours did it take to shoot it?
The amount of takes is very personal and depends on the project. For shorter movies, we do our “homework” on location during the shoot and spend anywhere from 5 – 7 hours with some on camera. For longer productions the editor will look at the footage and make edits. It will usually be 5 – 7 hours, depending on the quality.
Are there any “rules” of how or why we post the footage online?
Yes, a lot of people post our footage online, but most companies post it in some variation of “the way it goes”. I’d recommend not posting the footage online for a lot of the reasons:
It doesn’t give the viewer the right to feel like they are being entertained
They do not like it and will leave without hearing what’s going on
They are in control of it, they can change things to suit themselves
They feel like they are getting a free ride
There is a lot of “what the fuck” going on with the video. They put it online to show it off, not to teach it.
They feel that it is disrespectful to their brand. They will not stand for that.
