It is. But the challenge for any conductor can only be achieved by taking one of two approaches. They could go for a piece that’s not quite as rich and rewarding, but is certainly something of a challenge because it’s a longer piece. Or, perhaps, the conductor should give the piece a good warm up. The first option is a bit like the old adage that you don’t need to know any music to play the piano. The second is like a player playing the piano for the first time in a real orchestra, getting his feet wet and learning how to make the most of the piano’s great strength as an instrument, rather than getting a bit lost.
It’s a challenge, especially for a player who loves making music but isn’t quite sure where he’s going to be in the long term or whether he’ll have the talent to get to that top level again. I don’t mean to suggest, of course, that you are stuck with the same piece forever. Every musician should feel free to try his or her own piece from time to time. That’s not to say that you can’t change your mind about a piece of music, or that you can’t learn something new and enrich your own playing. There’s an endless number of possibilities for the great violin. The only thing you must decide is what you’re willing to give up in return for the challenge.
If a piece of music comes to you in your head and you get stuck there, don’t worry. It will pass. But you should be wary of saying to yourself that I can’t get this piece to work or I think it’s too hard, or I’m not sure if I’d be good at this piece. This time I just came up with a better version. And I did. And, as the saying goes, if you are not trying something new, then you are probably not trying hard enough.
If you find that you simply can’t get through the set you made, then here are some ideas for trying something new that might be a bit harder. Keep in mind that this is my opinion, not the opinion of the violin school: I’m not a teacher and it’s not meant to be a complete guideline for all other music directors. But just remember that when you try something new, it’s up to you, the artist, to decide whether you’re satisfied.
I hope these suggestions can help you in the difficult process of identifying good pieces to try and you can try harder if that’s what
