To learn to play a violin is like learning to speak or walk – you need to be really motivated and confident. People start by going for lessons with violinists from their school or club, although they do not need to be good players – they just need to be able to play well. They could always start practising at the age of five or six, but there are many people who are not good players yet but who love to play violin just as much.
How much time is needed for violin lessons?
It depends on how much time you want to spend on it. If you are just going to play once a week, start with six or seven lessons and gradually increase your workload. If you want more time to learn, then take a teacher who is very experienced – they will be able to give you more insight and help you develop good technique.
But if you want more time to relax and practice by yourself, then there are lots of places to meet other people, such as violin clubs. We also recommend that you try different areas. For instance, at a school you can travel a lot and can go out to visit clubs that have little or no music; on the beaches or with other members of your family; in a local café; playing by yourself at home; going to the theatre to see a movie or listening to music with other friends; going walking with another person on the streets at midday; playing in the rain; playing with friends.
What if my first lesson is cancelled?
We would suggest that you do not let this happen. As long as you stick to the rules and follow up, we are perfectly happy: you will be able to practise with other people all the time.
What do I need to start learning music?
You need a strong motivation – something that you can do because you like it (no matter how trivial this could seem to you), something which could be a problem at the beginning, or something which is simply a pleasant thing to do.
You also need to be in the right place at the right time, with the right equipment and the right people. And you need to be capable of getting out of what you are doing as fast as possible. If you are too shy and unsure of what you are doing, it is better not to start at all. Be brave and try it.
