In a previous post on my studio, I gave you some tips and tricks for drawing and painting in real life. However, this isn’t drawing in the way that we like as illustrators or comic book artists.
Instead, a very important part of drawing is making the right choices in the space. And if you want to draw a realistic depiction of a real life situation, you are going to need to deal with the space in a very different way than we usually can.
When I work on my paintings, I often try to use a little of a cartoon or surrealist style. Usually, I try to make my paintings a very different style from what most of us are used to. And since you are working with real images on this particular canvas, you will need to use some of those techniques too. But in order to get the best effect out of a painting, you should not just rely on what you’ve seen on a drawing book or online tutorials. You really need to think about different types of space in order to achieve what you are trying to do.

One of the main lessons that I learned in joining the Bricks to Clusters crew was the importance of being extremely flexible. It sounds like the “do anything you can” mindset you’re going to work with and this probably helps, but in this particular case it actually hurt the team. It is absolutely necessary to try to keep things moving. This means you may have to make difficult choices at times, but you have to have the ability to make a decision in the least amount of time possible, and the decision must be right for the whole project.
There is always a compromise involved though. You are really trying to push the limits of what can be done. In the case of Bricks to Clusters, if we were to use a lot of pixel based art work, it definitely helped for us to have lots of different styles and techniques. We were able to use all those styles and techniques when we made the paintings that came out of this process.
Another thing that I’ve learned from working with Bricks to Clusters was the importance of being flexible. It sounds like the “do anything you can” mindset you’re going to work with and this probably helps, but in this particular case it actually hurt the team. It is absolutely necessary to try
