However, the Republican candidates are generally very popular with the American citizens who self-identify with those groups. The latest survey for the Democratic field is conducted by Fox News and finds the same phenomenon. A whopping 72% of Democratic respondents have a favorable opinion of the candidates, the second highest in the history of such polling by this firm, for the first one. More than half of Republican respondents have favorable thoughts of the candidates too.
These favorable impressions are reflected throughout the campaign. Since the summer it’s been an almost daily issue of Republican candidates questioning Obama’s fitness for office, that he’s not qualified to be president, or that a future president would be better off leaving his party and going into the general election with them. In July, an NBC/Marist poll put it this way: “More than half of Democrats think the nation has been on the wrong track, with one third even saying it’s headed that way, an attitude attributed to distrust in both parties and a sense that the president has given his party a pass in the wake of the financial meltdown…” But this poll’s findings have proven to be incorrect because Republicans were not just skeptical of Obama’s fitness, they were more skeptical of his ability to even lead the country.
