The White House on Friday blasted an independent investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, calling it an “abject failure” and claiming Russia likely broke into the Democratic National Committee’s computer system.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Twitter that the investigation looked like it was a “fishing expedition” that could have been done by an outside contractor. The CIA has concluded Russia was behind hacking efforts intended to help Republican Donald Trump’s campaign last year.
“The American public deserves answers about why the administration’s response to Russian involvement in our election has been so different from that of the past five presidents,” he wrote.
The investigation released a report last week that said some Russian state-owned enterprises have gained access to the DNC’s network, and that the DNC may still have more work to do to protect against espionage.

Spicer’s tweet came hours after Trump himself blasted an independent investigation on Twitter as an example of the kind of thing Russia does.
“Just out report on the ‘Russiagate’ investigation: ‘Russian government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from U.S. political organizations, including from U.S. political organizations that supported Secretary Clinton’s election.’ So now it is reported that the same Russian government that came up with the hack of Democrats (by the way was hacking) now protects against U.S. political organizations?” Trump tweeted earlier Friday.
