Is it all about putting on the right clothes or a bit of style?
I’m very fortunate to have a fantastic job and to have great partners and friends who I really enjoy being around. They give me confidence in my work, give me a sense of purpose and make me happy to get out and dance.
The bottom line is that I don’t think the purpose of fashion is to dress like you’re a millionaire and be rich. It’s to create an interesting and enjoyable way for people to express themselves, which is also the main purpose of fashion. I’m very proud and happy in every outfit I’ve ever made; I only want to make people happy by wearing cool clothes.
What are your thoughts on fashion’s influence on the media’s portrayal of women?
I think that what we see is what we need to see. Fashion’s most obvious influence on the portrayal of women is the way we see ourselves in a magazine with a catwalk show.
We should never be ashamed of our bodies and in many ways women’s fashion really is a representation of who we are. We need to stand up for our own agency, to take control and to make our own choices when it comes to styling our clothing.
But what really bothers me is how women are perceived when on their way into stores, walking around in heels. There are times I feel uncomfortable, like I can’t trust them because they think this is what they should wear to work. In some cases I think it’s a little bit disrespectful and it kind of puts women on an inferiority complex and feels like these women feel guilty for their bodies.
In any case, I think we have to accept that we’ve given women the power to determine who they feel comfortable wearing when shopping in the first place.
What advice would you give to women who don’t want to wear heels in public?
When I’m going to work as quickly as I can, I make sure I’m in good shape. I’ve found that if I’m going to wear heels, I have to wear some good shoes. It isn’t just a matter of wanting something that looks good on you, you need to look good yourself.
